Soapstone Carving

In this course, we will follow the way of the Canadian Inuit:

“We, the Inuit are known for having a vision when working with stone.  For instance, I can look at a piece of raw material and “see” something in it.

True or False?? Most Inuit will agree.  I look at pieces, see “possibilities, but sometimes, it do not want to be what I envisioned..  The end result speaks for itself.” Dinah Andersen, Inuit Artist

Various coulours and sizes of soapstone will be available to choose from. When you have chosen your piece, a rough clay model will be made to help see into the stone. Using files and other tools, you will carve and polish the soapstone using your clay piece as a reference as you go.
